‘Tis the season for night sweats. Unless…
It’s that (mind-bogglingly hot) time of year again. Sigh. Unsurprisingly, our team has recently been fixated on cooling comforters: the Buffy Breeze and Rest Evercool® comforters in particular.
The ideal cooling comforter doesn’t necessarily make you colder. Instead, its temperature self-regulates according to your body heat. Naturally, this is a pretty intricate process, and one that not all brands can master.
With that in mind—and just in time for summer—we set out to find the most effective cooling comforter on the market.
Get to Know Rest & Buffy
We took the first step by paring down a number of brands to two key players, top-sellers in the world of (cooling) sleep: the Buffy Breeze Comforter and the Rest Evercool® Comforter.
Founded in 2017, Buffy makes bedding designed for (a) maximal comfort and (b) minimal environmental harm. Essentially, they have proven that working with the Earth (rather than against it) is the ticket to sheets, comforters, and pillows that remain unrivaled in comfort, durability, and style.
Their model has been revolutionary to say the least, as they have accumulated oodles of awards and praise from Architectural Digest, HGTV, and NBC (to name just a few) over the last 8 years.

On the other hand, we have Rest, founded in 2022 by a self-proclaimed hot sleeper looking to “save his marriage” with bedding to support both his and his wife’s temp preferences in bed. While Buffy makes bedding of all forms and functions, cooling is Rest’s MO. They only offer one comforter: the Evercool®, which was a 2024 Good Housekeeping Best Bedding Award Winner. We compared it to Buffy’s Breeze Comforter, and we learned a LOT…
TLDR: For the Skimmers Out There…
If you’re interested in only the need-to-knows, we laid them out here for you:

We break things down even further below…
Unboxing & First Impressions
While some of the following observations are inconsequential—packaging doesn’t make or break a comforter—we included them to be as thorough as possible.
Buffy’s Breeze Comforter came wrapped and taped tightly in plastic, then packed in a box. Once we wrangled it free, we were met with its undeniably plush contents. In fact, the comforter was so voluminous that we needed two people to fold it for photos. No wonder Buffy’s known for products named after clouds.
When we removed the Evercool® Comforter from its box, our entire team was first struck by its texture. The comforter casing was remarkably similar to dry-fit athletic clothes, with a sort of slippery sheen and softness. That said, the Evercool® Comforter was at most 1/2 the volume of the Breeze Comforter.

Breaking Down the Breeze: Materials, Efficacy, Customer Experience
We’re long-time fans of the eucalyptus-based lyocell fabric that Buffy’s Breeze comforter (fill and shell) are comprised of. This material is genuinely unlike any other we’ve felt before—it looks and feels adjacent to silk, but it’s highly absorbent, cool-to-the-touch, and moisture-wicking.
Through the choice of premium lyocell, not only is the Buffy Breeze Comforter sustainably made (with 76% less water than cotton), but it’s also biodegradable and compostable. It goes without saying that no toxic pesticides, polyester, or animal by-products are involved in any step of the process, as evidenced by the OEKO-TEX® testing it passed.
We also learned that Buffy’s Breeze Comforter is naturally weighted. This gives it a calming effect without the oppressive quality of a weighted blanket. Another neat detail is that this comforter is stitched with a subtle wave pattern, patented as Fill-Lock™ Engineering, which holds the fill in place so that you’re never fighting with your comforter to re-distribute its (therapeutic) weight across your bed.

The only qualm we had with the Breeze Comforter is that it’s dry clean only. That said, our team agreed that we wash our comforters so rarely that this feature, while inconvenient, wasn’t enough to deter us.
A Little Noise for the Breeze Sheets
In our Buffy research, we learned that the Breeze Comforter is justt one part of an entire Breeze collection. Within this lineup are the 49x award-winning Breeze Sheets. (And no, 49 isn’t a typo.)
Publications in every corner of the industry, from ABC to Forbes to House Beautiful, have named the Breeze Sheets “Best” in their category. Like the Breeze Comforter, the sheets feature 100% premium lyocell woven into Buffy’s signature SilkShape™ fabric strands, which are proven to be smoother than both cotton and linen. This proprietary design feature has earned Buffy a great deal of prestige in the bedding realm.

It was impressive to see that Buffy’s Breeze Sheets, with the same composition as the Breeze Comforter, have been incredibly well-received ever since their debut. Cooling is decidedly a Buffy specialty.
A Closer Look at the Rest Evercool®: Materials, Efficacy, Customer Experience
The shell of the Evercool® Comforter is made with a proprietary material that shares its name: Evercool® fabric. Consisting of 90% nylon and 10% spandex, this unique fiber ratio has been perfected to (a) distribute heat faster than cotton and (b) imitate the weave/texture of silk.
The Evercool® Comforter filling is a combination of TENCEL™ (brand-name lyocell) and Sorona® polyester. In tandem, the two materials create a cooling, breathable nighttime cover.

While Sorona® is a fairly sustainable material (it’s “partially” plant-based), neither the nylon nor spandex of the comforter shell shares that quality. Both are non-biodegradable, require extensive amounts of energy (read: global gas emissions) to produce, and they shed microplastics when washed. Remember, nylon and spandex comprise the part of the comforter closest to your body.
We appreciated the one-year limited warranty offered by Rest, but were frustrated to see that returns cost a $10 processing fee, and must be made within 30 days. Who charges for returns anymore? There was much to consider…
Our Hearts Led Us to the Buffy Breeze Comforter
Both Buffy and Rest knew as much as to avoid plain ol’ cotton when developing their respective cooling comforters, and it’s paid off. Each has a loyal entourage of fans, and with so many features running neck and neck (price and ratings in particular) our evaluation came down to the tiny-yet-noteworthy details.
In the end, Buffy’s 8 years of expertise gave them the edge. Buffy is so confident in premium lyocell as their material of choice that every single component of the Breeze Comforter is fully comprised of it.
It felt like the Evercool® Comforter cut corners by incorporating a blend of materials that likely cost less $$ to process, but charged the Earth more. For us, it came down to this question: if we’re spending ~$200 on a comforter either way, why not opt for the most innovative and sustainable model?
As Buffy customers, we felt genuinely cared for. They offer a 7-night free trial, so you can sleep with your new Buffy comforter for a week (!) before deciding whether it’s right for you. Shipping and returns are free, and you have 50 days post-purchase to send any product back… but we really doubt that’ll happen.
