From Elon Musk’s Twitter Feed, to the World’s Most Famous Podcast, to My YouTube Suggestions… Eight Sleep is Everywhere.
I first heard about this temperature-regulating mattress cover a few years ago when it won the 2021 Men’s Health Sleep Award. At the time I remember thinking, who in the world would pay $2,000+ for a smart bed? Since then, Eight Sleep has just continued to blow up. So apparently a lot of people would.
And even though they have guys like Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Aaron Judge singing Eight Sleep’s praises, there are countless “normal people” (aka not millionaires) raving about how it changed their lives, how it’s well worth the money, yada yada. I figured, okay, if this thing is still blowing people’s minds, it might just be everything it’s cracked up to be.
I decided to do some recon of my own before dropping $2,000 on a mattress cover. Being the generous, gracious person I am, I also decided to share the most informative reviews I was able to find. Let’s dive in.
First, a Brief Background on Eight Sleep
Eight Sleep is famous for its intelligent sleep system that gives you up to one more hour of sleep each night. Since they launched their start-up idea in 2014, they’ve been racking up the press, the accolades, and the famous (and non-famous) user base.
Newsweek called Eight Sleep the “mattress of the future,” but it feels more like the mattress of the present with how many people are talking about it. The mattress cover fits on top of your pre-existing mattress, like a bedsheet, and dishes out instant access to features like temperature control, a vibrating bed alarm, and an app that tracks all the data and shows you how much it’s helping your sleep.
At its core, this mattress cover makes it easier to fall asleep, stay asleep, sleep deeper, and wake up without an alarm. Here’s what the people have to say about it.
“1,000 Days with Eight Sleep Pod. It Changed My Life.”
Overview: Shervin Shares goes in-depth with his Eight Sleep experience, starting with the setup. You just fill up the Wi-Fi-connected Hub with water and connect the app—and you can send heated or cooled water through a tubing system woven into the mattress cover. He says through his enhanced sleep, Eight Sleep has “optimized [his] life with the least effort required.” Not a bad endorsement.
Pros:
- Temperature Autopilot: Through biometric sensors, the Eight Sleep Pod can make real-time adjustments to your bed’s temperature based on your body temperature.
- Sleep Fitness Score: the Pod will tell you how well you’re sleeping each night and help you make optimizations.
- App Updates: Every so often Eight Sleep will add features to the app, upgrade the app’s speed and connectivity, etc. The product levels up alongside your sleeping habits.
Cons:
- It’s pricey, but he claims he viewed it as an investment. It’s worth the value when he can “fall asleep faster, stay asleep, and just get a better night’s sleep overall.”
- Membership fee: you have to pay a membership fee for features like temperature autopilot. He claims it’s worth it, though, especially with all the app updates and new features.
Eight Sleep Pod 3 Review | The Good, The Bad, And The Infuriating
Overview: Richard Kohberger gives an “unbiased, unsponsored review” of the Eight Sleep Pod after 7 months. He breaks everything down into “The Good,” “The Bad,” and “The Infuriating,” which is amusing. He talks about how it’s pretty cool for something designed to improve your sleep to be able to show you how it’s doing that via sleep tracking.
The Good:
- Automatically adjusts temperature throughout the night to match the ideal temperatures during the various sleep stages. (Temperature Autopilot)
- Sleep tracking and quantifiable results of the product.
- Dual-temperature zones: you can control the temperature for each side of the bed, which is a game-changing feature if you sleep with a partner. (There’s also a warming, vibrating alarm for each side.)
- You can save money on the power bill by not having to run the AC so hard.
- Low maintenance & very quiet.
The Bad:
- Price. He mentions that since he’s using it 7-9 hours every single night he’s able to justify the splurge. (Seems to be a common theme.)
- The vibrating alarm for his partner sometimes wakes him up, but they get up around the same time anyway.
- No hardware controls.
The Infuriating:
- The membership fee.
Eightsleep Pod 3 Cover Review (Hype or Help?)
Overview: Steve Julien gives an update on his experience with the Eight Sleep Pod 3 Cover after 6 months of use (197 sleeps). He breaks down what the best things are, what the worst things are, and what most people (including myself) really want to know: how well does it work?
Pros:
- Comfort Level is 10/10. Doesn’t affect how you like your mattress at all.
- Temperature Autopilot (yet again).
- Measures your REM sleep, light sleep, deep sleep, etc., and how it’s all improving.
- Helps create better sleep routines and consistent sleep times.
- He defends the membership fee by saying that Eight Sleep is constantly upgrading and innovating the product through ~the cloud~ so it’s not like you’re just paying a fee to use a product you already own, you’re subscribing to an evolving, cutting-edge experience.
Cons:
- He doesn’t love the warming, vibrating alarm feature.
- Price is not cheap—but he mentions his sleep is around 20% better than before, making it more than worth it.
Overview: This guy writes on his blog that he was skeptical at first, but now can’t sleep without his Eight Sleep. From the review: The Eight Sleep Pod Cover is an amazing product, and it made a huge leap in surface comfort compared to the Pod 2. While I could only prove a small difference in my sleep quality with data, more importantly, I hate sleeping without it.
Reasons to buy:
- Temperature Control
- Improved Sleep Quality
- Sleep Tracking
- Built-in alarm
It Seems the Overwhelming Consensus Is That Eight Sleep Is Beyond Worth It.
If you’re in the market for drastically improved sleep, then this science-backed, temperature-regulating mattress cover might be your answer. I guess there’s a reason everybody loves this thing, from the world’s most famous CEOs to an average Joe trying to improve his health, cognition, and mood through better sleep habits.
The main con I found in all of these reviews was the price (both the initial and the membership fee). But, while this Pod Cover is definitely not cheap, the technology is bulletproof, the capabilities are constantly evolving, and the results are indisputable (literally, Eight Sleep’s tracking numbers don’t lie). You can also get the Pod for $0 down followed by interest-free installments. After I saw that and that they offer free shipping and a 30-night, risk-free trial, I went ahead and ordered one.
Eight Sleep has improved over 55 million nights of sleep and it keeps blowing up because extraordinary sleep makes a difference. Head to their website now and see for yourself what it’s like to experience the pinnacle of sleep optimization.
