I’m Not Getting Invited to the Met Gala Anytime Soon…
But I still like to look nice. There’s something about going out in a fresh outfit that just makes me feel more… confident. The problem is, I’ve always kinda struggled with knowing how to put one together.
Shopping for me is usually a horrible experience—one that ends in being overwhelmed by the endless racks of clothes and the pressure to make the right choices. On top of that, I haven’t even had time to suffer through it since I started my job last year. It felt like I was doomed to repeat the same basic cycle: jeans, plain T-shirt, go.
But then YouTube started suggesting all these unboxing videos to me for a service called ThreadBeast (the algorithm strikes again…).
I saw guys who seemingly had good taste open black boxes with some pretty fire clothes—the idea is that ThreadBeast sends you a fresh box every month to hook you up with new outfits, from simple staples to statement pieces.
New styles delivered straight to my door every month, and I didn’t even have to brave the mall? It kinda sounded like the perfect solution. But I was still a little skeptical about how a personal stylist I’ve never met could really predict what I’d like wearing. So I did some more research.
WTF is a “ThreadBeast?”
According to their website, ThreadBeast delivers curated packages of streetwear every month, all based on your own style and preferences. It was founded by Uday Singh as a way to fix the “broken process” (tell me about it…) of retail shopping for new clothes. You just fill out a style assessment, choose which tier of subscription you want, and they send you your first box.
Since their beginning, ThreadBeast has grown into a pretty huge operation, racking up partnerships with brands like Puma, Adidas, Levi’s, Diamond Supply Co., and Champion. They have over half a million Instagram followers and some pretty vocal fans, with over 7,000 reviews giving their service 4.71 stars.
So the hype was there. And ThreadBeast promised something I felt like I really needed: fashion and convenience. All for a pretty solid value.
I Gotta Admit, I Was Still a Little Bit Skeptical
According to the reviews, their two most popular tiers are the Essential Plan ($95) and the Premium Plan ($150). The Premium Plan comes with 6-7 items (compared to 4-5 in the Essential) and you get some “premium denim and outerwear,” too. Since the weather was getting colder, I decided to try out the Premium.
But I still wasn’t sold on the fact that this would work. I mean, could $150 a month actually get me worthwhile clothes? $150 is what I would normally spend on a pair of jeans and a T-shirt alone. Getting 6-7 pieces worth wearing for that seemed too good to be true.
But I said f*** it, I’m just gonna find out. They had me answer some questions on a style assessment—things like my overall vibe, colors I like, the particular fit of clothes I wear, places I’d generally shop, and my sizes. I wasn’t totally sure what to answer for some of the questions, but I read that you can go in and switch up your preferences whenever you want, so that took the pressure off.
I fired off my answers and placed my order. I was excited, but the only thing to do was wait.
The Moment I’ve Been Waiting For: Unboxing This Baby
My ThreadBeast box came surprisingly quick in the mail for free shipping. Finally I got to live out my dreams of being a YouTuber and have my own unboxing. It had some slick branding, and it kinda gave me that first-gift-on-Christmas-morning type feeling.
Right off the bat, I saw some stuff I really rocked with. The Weather Report tee was an early favorite, and the black jeans from Primitive Skateboarding somehow fit perfectly right out of the box (this doesn’t even happen for me at the store.) In total, the box came with:
- Weather Report tee
- “Stay Cool” tee
- True Religion joggers
- Primitive Skateboarding black jeans
- A Ben Sherman flannel (retailed for $99)
- Pair of socks
- A Herschel Supply Co. wallet
So Here’s What I Really Thought
I’m gonna be real, I didn’t love it all. I wasn’t really into the True Religion branding on the joggers at first but, then again, I really appreciated how the box kinda gave me some of what I like and pushed me a little bit outside my comfort zone at the same time.
And eventually, the statement pieces kinda grew on me. The first box was pretty-good-not-perfect, but considering what I’m paying for what I get each month, the value seems sort of insane. It’s funny they gave me a wallet in my first box because I needed somewhere to put all this extra cash I’m saving.
In all seriousness, though, month one gave me plenty to be excited about. I was getting some quality staples and some opportunities to expand my style, which is exactly what I wanted. So far, so good.
Fast Forward a Few Months…
And seeing that ThreadBeast box on my doorstep is the best part of my week. I’ve been completely loving it so far, and here’s the best part: they get a little better each time. There’s a QR code you can scan in each box that lets you rate the items, so their stylists can keep improving the personalization.
You can also write in custom feedback and comments that go directly to the stylist, which is pretty fire. I had a wedding coming up and let my stylist know it’d be great to get some preppy / formal wear in the next box, and they hooked it up—just like that. Gone were the days of stressing over what to wear, and I was building a seriously versatile wardrobe without having to shell out an arm and a leg.
I also love the flexibility of it all. If there’s a month coming up where I know I won’t be needing that many clothes, I can downgrade my subscription to the basic tier before ramping it back up again. I mean, I basically have a personal stylist on speed dial.
I Can Confidently Say ThreadBeast Is More Than Worth it
Especially if you’re someone like me who just doesn’t have the time or the energy to go shopping all the time. I know that the way you dress says a lot about you, and being able to pop out feeling good and looking good has been a huge boost for me.
Ultimately, ThreadBeast isn’t just about getting quality clothes at a major discount, it’s about reinventing your style and giving you back your confidence, one box at a time. And I’m so here for it. I don’t think I’ll be canceling my subscription anytime soon.
